Who is Soderbergh? Currently Hollywood's hottest hot shot,
Soderbergh burst onto the independent scene with his provocative,
multi-award winning feature debut sex, lies and videotape in 1989.
With the film world seemingly at his feet the guy from Baton Rouge
committed critical and commercial hara-kiri, producing a black and
white film about the life of writer Franz Kafka that fell foul of
studios and audiences alike. The critics liked it though and they
were to stay with him through a lean period, which produced
increasingly personal, cine-literate projects which very few people
saw. Out of favour in Tinseltown, Soderbergh continued to plough
his own furrow, producing numerous notable Indie pics along the
way. Though disillusioned with his craft, it was arguably during
this period that he produced some of his best work. Thankfully the
head honchos at Universal had kept Soderbergh's number on speed
dial and when a director was needed to give a little sparkle to Out
Of Sight, Soderbergh got the call. Back in the big time - but very
much on his own terms - the rest as they say is history for the
self-proclaimed luckiest bastard you ever saw. As well as an
introductory essay, this Pocket Essential reviews and analyses each
of Soderbergh's films. There's a handy reference section listing
all the Soderbergh related publications- and there ain't many- and
a full filmography including Soderbergh's tireless work as a
producer and cameraman.
An examination of the relationship between sport and its cultural
heritage. Sport is an integral part of British culture and an
important aspect of modern life. Although its importance has been
recognised by academic historians, sport has yet to be fully
appreciated in the growing and related fields of heritage and
museum studies. Sport and heritage have operated as seemingly
separate spheres, yet together they can convey powerful messages;
convergence between them is seen in the rise and popularity of
sports museums, the collecting of sporting art and memorabilia, and
popular concern over the demise of historic sports buildings and
sport-related sites. These places, exhibitions and activities help
to shape our understanding of sport, history and the past. The
essays in this volume explore sports history as manifested in
academic enquiry, museum exhibitions and heritage sites. They deal
among other things with the public representation of sport and its
significance; its impacton public spheres; the direction of sports
heritage studies and their aims; the role of museums in public
history; and place, memory and meaning in the historic sports
landscape. Contributors: Jeffrey Hill, Jed Smith,Anthony Bateman,

For centuries, the English Lake District has been renowned as an
important cultural, sacred and literary landscape. It is therefore
surprising that there has so far been no in-depth critical
examination of the Lake District from a tourism and heritage
perspective. Bringing together leading writers from a wide range of
disciplines, this book explores the tourism history and heritage of
the Lake District and its construction as a cultural landscape from
the mid eighteenth century to the present day. It critically
analyses the relationships between history, heritage, landscape,
culture and policy that underlie the activities of the National
Park, Cumbria Tourism and the proposals to recognise the Lake
District as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It examines all aspects
of the Lake District's history and identity, brings the story up to
date and looks at current issues in conservation, policy and
tourism marketing. In doing so, it not only provides a unique and
valuable analysis of this region, but offers insights into the
history of cultural and heritage tourism in Britain and beyond.
An increasingly pervasive influence on contemporary European cinema
and mainstream Hollywood, American independent films have
frequently provided the most experimental and distinctive voices in
US cinema. A whole generation of innovative and idiosyncratic
American film-makers, including Steven Soderbergh, Todd Haynes, Hal
Hartley and Spike Lee, emerged during the critical and commercial
renaissance of the late 1980s and 90s.
In this revised and updated new edition, Jason Wood provides a
guide to one hundred of the most interesting and influential
American independent films, featuring indie classics such as
"Shadows," "Blood Simple "and"""Reservoir Dogs," with twenty-five
brand new entries, including recent releases such as "Old Joy,"
"Junebug" and "Me and You and Everyone We Know." Each entry
includes a plot synopsis, a commentary on the film's significance,
production and exhibition history and cross-references to other
films. The new edition also includes prefaces by film-makers Tom
Kalin and Scott McGehee and David Siegel, as well as an
introduction by Jason Wood charting the history and defining
features of American independent film.

"Last Words" features extensive interviews with Christopher
Nolan, Harmony Korine, Charlie Kaufmann, Nicolas Winding Refn, Wim
Wenders, Michael Winterbottom, Christian Petzhold, and many others.
Each interview is preceded by an overview of the director's work,
and the volume's authoritative introductory essay explores the
value of these directors and why they are rarely given an
appropriate platform to discuss their craft.
Professional practice is at the heart of youth work training but
integrating the theory learned in class with the reality of
placements can sometimes require extra support. This comprehensive
textbook is designed to help students working with young people
become competent and ethical practitioners, able to reflect on
their learning and interventions in young people s lives.
Divided into three parts, this core text:
- provides an understanding of and commitment to the "principles"
of youth work
- explores how "contexts" shape youth work
- demonstrates the core "practice" skills that are required to
make a meaningful impact on the lives of young people.
Engaging and practice-driven, this is an essential text for all
students learning about working with young people, whether on youth
work or allied courses. It includes case-studies, tasks, further
reading and reflective questions to help readers make connections
between their own knowledge and practice."

Pop stars have provided audiences with performative moments that
have become ingrained in popular consciousness. They are a lens
through which deeper understandings about race, gender, politics,
history and the artistic process can be understood. When combined
with the most affective of mediums - cinema, the combination can be
both thrilling and alarming. From the relatively early days of
cinema, figures from the world of popular music have made forays
into acting and contributed cameo appearances. From Little Richard
and Kylie Minogue to Nick Cave and Tom Waits, Pop Stars On Film:
Popular Culture in a Global Market offers a collection of essays on
some of the most influential international performances from a
diverse range of cultural icons. The book considers industry
shifts, access and diversity, but also the notion of cultural
appropriation, audience appeal, marketing and demographics. Perhaps
most importantly, the publication will look at what happens when
cultures collide and coalesce.
In "100 Road Movies", each entry will offer an insightful critique
in terms of aesthetics, plot structure and defining formal and
thematic features, whilst also considering the title in the wider
context and understanding of by what criteria a film may be
considered a road movie. Full credits, including year of
production, principal cast and technical crew and country of origin
will also be included at the foot of each entry. There will be a
selection of illustrative stills, approximately twenty-five in
total. The scope is broad, a consideration of the elements that
gave rise to the road movie sub-genre, how this sub-genre
corresponds to other traditional genres (the thriller, the western
etc) and how various international countries have adopted the road
movie to reflect their cultural, social, political and geographical
identities.
Talking Movies is a collection of interviews with audacious and
respected contemporary filmmakers. Selected directors represent
figures whose work has defined how images are processed and
appreciated by modern audiences. The book offers a truly
international perspective, including global pioneers who frankly
discuss their craft and the social, political, and technological
forces that inform it: Laurent Cantet, Robert Gu?diguian, C?dric
Kahn, and Bertrand Tavernier (France); David Gordon Green, Hal
Hartley, and Richard Linklater (USA); Alejandro Gonz?lez I rritu
and Carlos Reygadas (Mexico); Stephen Frears and Andrew K?tting
(UK); Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Turkey); Atom Egoyan (Canada); Suzanne
Bier (Denmark); Tran Anh Hung (Vietnam); Samira Makhmalbaf (Iran);
Elia Suleiman (Palestine); and Lucrecia Martel (Argentina).
Ten years in the planning and with contributions by 27 expert
authors, this is a comprehensive record of archaeological research
at Chedworth Roman Villa, Gloucestershire (now in the care of the
National Trust), from the nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries.
The volume brings together a large body of new, contextualised
information about the villa including: a history of work at
Chedworth from the 1860s to the present; a detailed fabric survey
of the extant remains; description and analysis of the Roman
structural remains; description and analysis of the decorative
elements (e.g. mosaics, sculpture) and finds (e.g. coins, Roman
artefacts, glass, pottery and bones); discussion of the development
of the villa and its place in the landscape; the consolidation and
display of the villa from its discovery in 1864 to the present. The
volume is well illustrated with drawings and photos ranging in date
from the late 1800s to the present. The volume will appeal to all
with an interest in Roman Britain, and Roman villas in particular,
and in the antiquarians who first discovered and investigated them.
